60% Dartmouth!

Sunday, April 28, 2019
First of all, Happy 19th Birthday to my beautiful little girl at the University of San Francisco! I love and miss you, Callie!!

Well, we’ve returned from an amazing trip to New England, and Joe has decided he will probably choose Dartmouth, and, oh my gosh, I had a whole post written here, and this stupid app didn’t auto save it as my laptop did. I hate using the iPad for this!

Ugh. Anyway, so here I go again, trying to recall and duplicate what I wrote last night.

We arrived in Boston around 2:00 pm on Wednesday. Joe took a different flight, and arrived an hour before we did. He was just boarding the Dartmouth Coach when Aidan and I got off the plane.

So, we headed to pick up our rental and were pleasantly surprised at what I got for $14 a day:

So we plotted a course for downtown Boston, and OMG, driving in Boston is a nightmare on wheels!

The roads were extremely narrow, with no white line dividing the “lanes.” I didn’t even know there were two lanes (the road was so narrow, I didn’t think two lanes were possible), until some guy started honking and aggressively trying to edge past me on the left. Okay, so two lanes. The roads were confusing, winding, and pitted. Cars would literally just stop in the middle of the road, their blinkers on, heedless of the bleating fury of everyone else trying to squeeze by them.

Literally, we encountered cars stopped like that all over the place, and I don’t use the word “literally” as lightly as that guy in Parks and Rec.

There are apparently no rules of the road in Boston, either. People just drive wherever and however they want-running red lights, careening around turns like they’re practicing the drift, and a host of other traffic skullduggery.

And not only are the roads congested with cars, but with people, too. I suppose many of them grew tired of risking their lives everyday and have resorted to walking. But that doesn’t seem to make them less careless, as they jaywalk into traffic all over the place as though they were blind and deaf.

But the lack of obedience to traffic laws was balanced out by the beauty of the old city. The architecture, with its haphazard blending of new and old, was sorta charming, if not downright stunning. We marveled at the details carved into some of the older buildings with awe.

Aidan said this old house standing proudly between modern buildings reminded her of Stuart Little’s house:

Soon, it was time to head toward New Hampshire and our hotel, so we inched toward the highway, which was a huge relief after driving through downtown Boston.

And since I’m running out of time, I’ll have to post about the rest of our amazing trip tomorrow. Suffice to say that Vermont is now my favorite place, specifically around the town of Quechee! And Dartmouth was awesome too! Lots more pics of Boston, Vermont, and New Hampshire to come!

Dartmouth Awaits

Monday, April 8, 2019
Dartmouth has sent us our flight itinerary for our campus trip! We fly into Boston on the 24th, and Joe will ride the Dartmouth bus to the campus while I follow behind in a rental. I’ll get a hotel in Hanover while Joe stays in the residence hall on campus. I’ll get a chance to tour the campus with Joe sometime Thursday. So while Joe is immersed in campus life and sitting in on classes, I need to find some places to sightsee. I’ve never been to New Hampshire, so it’ll be so exciting.

Our flight doesn’t leave until 7:00 pm on Saturday, so Joe and I (and possibly Aidan) will have all day to sightsee in Boston. If any of you have any ideas of places we should visit, email me or leave a comment!

This weekend was nice. I mostly worked on The Secret’s Tribute treasure hunt. I think that casque will likely be found soon, as the immediate area of where its most likely located is now known. I have a pretty solid idea of what needs to be done to finally solve the poem, and I mentioned it on the FB group. A few people are taking the idea and running with it, so maybe they’ll beat me to it. That’s okay though, because these treasure hunts are supposed to be fun, and if I really cared about finding the treasure myself, I wouldn’t have shared them he information.

Anyway, it’s in Louisville, KY. Probably.

Here’s another pic of Callie without her squinching her eyes:

Here’s a pic of Aidan goofing off with me guitar:

Not much else is going on. Just looking forward to a trip to a new place!

College Days Coming!

Thursday, April 4, 2019
I’m still around, y’all--never fear! :)

My daughter has confiscated my laptop, so I am laptopless, and the laptop was what I used to write my blogs. She’s been writing a lot, and we are researching the market and agents for her writing, which is amazing. I’m proud of how well she’s adjusting to life in Naples. She will have her license back in May, and she’s looking forward to that.

Joe was accepted to several well-known universities, but has narrowed his choice to two of the three full-ride scholarships he was offered-

Dartmouth or Northwestern, both of which are top-notch schools.

A full ride academic scholarship to those schools is a really big deal. Both of the colleges are offering us an all-expense paid trip to tour their campuses. I guess my ex will go to Northwestern with my son on April 15th, and I’ll  go to Dartmouth in New Hampshire with my son on April 24th-26th.
I’m very excited about the trip, and very proud of Joe.

Callie is doing very well at the University of San Francisco, making the dean’s list and excelling in all her classes. She just returned from a weekend trip to San Diego with her friends.
I just tried to upload a pic with this app, but doesn’t look like it’s working, so I’ll have to try and upload pics later when I have access to an actual computer.

Actually, I’m hoping this pic will load—Callie is bottom left, squinching her eyes.

Other activities we’ve been involved with lately include some local geocaching, thrift and antique store shopping, and paintball (thanks Will aka Taco from CC!)

We participated in a paintball tournament with Will and his team and although we came home a little bruised and battered after playing for almost 7 hours straight, we had a great time and will definitely participate in future tournaments!

Doing this blog on a phone is terrible. I’ll get this post fixed later. Lol.

Oh yeah, work is going well. Recently celebrated my one year anniversary there and got a pretty dan decent raise and bonus!

Proud Momma!

Joe won first place out of all SW Florida Model UN students! He won a $1000 scholarship!! I’ll post the video in a few where he gets a standing ovation!

WSOF Trip Report

Monday, January 28, 2019
The weekend was pretty amazing.
I’ll try to do it justice with my write-up, but I have to admit I’m exhausted.

Right off the bat, I will say that both my and Sacha’s expenses were totally paid for by a very, very generous person. I had nothing to lose by going, so I went. I’m really glad I did.

I arrived in Las Vegas around 1:00 pm on Friday and took an Uber to the Bellagio.. James couldn’t attend because my invite came near the last minute, and he couldn’t get off work. He knows about my search partner, of course, and knows our relationship is strictly platonic. My search partner, who now everyone knows is Scott, was there when I got there, but had a business meeting to attend so he generously gave me a little money to play the slots with until Sacha arrived 4:30.

I played a couple slots, and won a little and lost a little, then went up to the room to rest up because I knew we’d be up late. We had planned to go see one of my old friends, Scott Nicholson, perform his dueling pianos show at the Excalibur at 9:00.

Here’s a pic from the air near my layover in Minneapolis. It was -8 degrees — the coldest weather I’ve ever experienced!

But alas Vegas was much warmer:

Sacha and I had a great time catching up, and just talked until Scott arrived at 5:45. I feel very comfortable with Sacha, because she gets me. Her son and ex-husband are both autistic, so she recognizes the traits and doesn’t think I’m too weird.

Sacha is full of inspiring stories. I’m glad she’s as outgoing as she is, because there was never awkward silence. I’m not the best at speaking, so I was content to listen to her interesting and informing stories.

After a bit, we decided to go downstairs and try our hand at Blackjack. I still had the money Scott gave us, so I gave half to Sacha and we bought into a table. Basically, we couldn’t lose. It seemed like Blackjacks were in season, because they kept showing up. So we walked away with a nice surplus of chips, and Scott said we could keep what we won.

Scott arrived, and we decided to eat at Gordon Ramsey’s pub at Caesar’s Palace. I order the black Angus steak and Mac n cheese. It was a ton of food. I ate my steak, which was delicious, and some Mac n cheese, but couldn’t come close to eating it all, so we boxed it up and took it back to the room for later.

By that time, it was already 9:00, which was like midnight to me. I was exhausted. Mike Cowlings had invited us to a suite at the Flamingo, but Sacha wanted to talk to Jason, and I just wanted a hot bath, my iPad, and that comfy Bellagio bed. So Scott headed to the suite, and I climbed into a nice hot bath and put together a jigsaw puzzle on my iPad before getting into bed. I needed to unwind after processing so many sights, sounds, and textures. Las Vegas used to soothe me in a weird way, but now that I’m older, the crowds and noise and lights are too much. Except when this happens—that’s a thousand dollar payout, by the way...

The next morning we had breakfast in our room and talked about ttotc and ouaw a little. Scott had set up an appt at the spa for me to get my hair done, but I decided I didn’t want to sit for an hour, and I didn’t much care who liked or didn’t like my hair, so I asked Sacha if she wanted it. She said she needed a trim, so she enjoyed the spa treatment. She really deserved this little getaway and I wanted her to really enjoy herself.

Time flew by that day. After Sacha had her hair trimmed, we were supposed to meet John Bobbitt and boomergirl for lunch, but John Bobbitt was running behind, so boomer, Scott, Sacha and I enjoyed a nice brunch at the Bellagio Buffet.
John Bobbitt finally arrived, so we met and said hi to him in the lobby, then Sacha took him to lunch at Noodles.

Scott’s father had passed away on Thursday, so he was not able to stay for the poker tournament, and he left after lunch.

Boomer and I went to play some penny slots where she tore them up. She’s a lucky little lady! I finally found a machine that liked me, so I ended up with a decent cash out voucher as well.

As an aside, the Property Brothers were at Bellagio by the giant pig filming a commercial. Pretty cool!!

Time flew by, and soon it was time to leave Bellagio and head to Bally’s for the poker tournament. No one "shunned" me, that I could tell.
Everyone was very nice, including Jamie, who approached and asked if we could talk. I won’t divulge what was said, but at the end,we hugged. I wonder if anyone caught that on camera. Lol. We both want the hate and lies to stop. If a certain forum continues to spread hate and lies, well, just know you’re going against Jamie’s wishes.

The poker tournament itself was fun. The way it worked was that you bought in at $60, and they gave everyone the same amount of chips. So although you played with thousands of dollars in chips, you really only invested $60. And you had to play until you busted, or won. If you busted within the first hour or so, you could buy in again with another sixty. Thankfully, I didn’t go bust and need to take advantage of that option.

I’ve never played poker in a casino, so I didn’t really know anything about the game. However, the dealers knew there were some noobs in the room, so they were very helpful and friendly.

My table had some pretty cool guys at it, also very friendly and helpful. I had a strategy, which surprisingly worked, and I steadily built my stash of chips as players started to drop out.

I had a couple of great hands, and one EPIC one, in which I played a fierce match with John Bobbitt, who was known as a very aggressive player. I was nervous when he went just about all in, and he had a large stack of chips. I had to put in most of mine to meet his bet, too. Everyone else had folded.
So I met his bet, and there was a LOT of money in the middle of he table, and he looked really confident. But I had a straight. So, I thought he could be confident with a pair of Kings or Aces. I didn’t think he would have anything better. I still had a chance to win.

The time came when we had to show our hands, and he had a straight too, with a higher high card. I thought I’d lost...BUT it turned out I had a straight  FLUSH. I didn’t even know until the dealer pointed to me and said, “You win!”

I couldn’t believe it, and everyone at the table cheered. That felt pretty good, and John was a great sport and shook my hand and said "Well played." I told him the same and the game went forward.

Time whittled on, and I was growing tired, yawning frequently. I wasn’t looking forward to the long trudge back to the Bellagio (I had to detour through Caesar’s to cash out a voucher), but I didn’t want to quit playing —I was having too much fun.

When they condensed to one table, I couldn’t believe I was there. Of course, boomergirl was there too, because she’s a little leprechaun of Lady Luck. Not to mention a secret Jedi Poker Master. Her pile of chips made mine look nearly invisible.

I knew I wouldn’t last too long, and I was right. I think there were 11 or 12 at the last table. I remember Copper Dan saying, "And then there were 9," after a player busted out. I’m pretty sure I was the next to go when I had a pair of kings and a pair of low cards or some hand like that, and someone, Mike Cowling, I think, had a pair of Kings and something higher than 3’s. I can’t remember, really, because by that time, I was pretty exhausted. I told everyone thanks, and to have a great night and bowed out with a smile. I lingered a bit to cheer for boomergirl, but my eyelids were too heavy to stay long. Sacha and most everyone had already left, so I started my hike back to the hotel, happy with how the night played out.

These were the top five...no surprise that Boomer is there....congrats to all the winners! I borrowed this photo from DeCall, since I was long asleep by this time...

Sunday morning, I woke up early, and took an Uber to the airport, which wasn’t busy at all. I flew through security and made it to the gate early enough to relax and charge my phone before I boarded. This time, the layover was in Detroit, which also looked frigid.

So there ya have it...quick, fun, progress-filled weekend!

Leavin’ On a Jet Plane...

Heading out to Vegas tomorrow! Should be a blast!

Some Recent Stuff I Like....

Wednesday, January 9, 2019
So, for Christmas, I bought the family a new PS4, so that two people in a household can play together. I also got Red Dead Redemption 2, and if you happen to play, give Wynnde a shout out next time you see me online. Aidan usually plays when I do, and we’ve met some interesting characters. Word of the mother/daughter team has spread, and we are always being invited into posses, so it’s a lot of fun. Aidan is hilarious on the game. She’s outfitted her character in a long pink skirt and matching blouse, and she’s always jumping off her horse and running around tackling people. It’s really funny to watch, because apparently the more you run, the more stamina and speed you gain, so she’s really fast. I can’t even describe it, but it’s hilarious. I’ll try to get a video of it so you all can fully appreciate it.

Oh my gosh. I do have a video...it’s short, though, and she doesn’t run much, but she does throw one of our more annoying, but hilarious posse members (sand flea) over a cliff. Lol. In the game, you can turn off friendly fire, and that’s when we you can have a free for all with friends.

Oh! I finally got a victory in Fortnite Battle Royale!

Okay...so on to other stuff...

I got off work early the other day, so Aidan and I painted. I worked on my horse in the snow and Aidan worked on some space jellyfish.

And yes, I know I’m not any good, but it’s soothing and a good way to spend time with my kids. Aidan asked me to paint her something pink, so I painted what I call, "Aidandromeda," her own galaxy. After I took this pic, I finished it with my thumbprint in the center.

I paint spirals a lot. I’m not sure what it is about them, but painting them is very calming for me. Here’s another I recently painted:

Maybe it’s an Aspergers thing...like Vincent Van Gogh (he reportedly had Asperger’s) and "Starry Night." But I just enjoy painting circles and spirals...

Let’s see... here’s a couple pics from Christmas...all three kids and the dog on Aidan’s bed...

And Callie, checking her phone in between episodes of "The Good Doctor."

And here’s a video of Aidan’s dog being a little crazy after I gave him a treat...that’s the microwave beeping in the background...

Ummmm...I guess that’s about it for now... I’ll post more soon!
