Montana--The Land of Worry-Free Squirrels

Thursday, February 19, 2015

Tomorrow, I will be in a place I have never been--MONTANA. Yes, Montana in the wintertime. And yes, I believe I have a pretty good reason to be there. So, here are some fun Montana facts you might not know. My comments are in blue.

Giant Springs, Montana is home to the largest fresh water spring in the U.S. Lewis and Clark were mesmerized by the beauty of this area. I want to see it.

In Helena, it is illegal to throw an item across a street.

It is illegal to have a sheep in the cab of your truck without a chaperone. Luckily, my search partner will be with me, so if we decide to give any sheep a ride to Wal Mart, we'll be okay.

In Montana, it is illegal for married women to go fishing alone on Sundays, and illegal for unmarried women to fish alone at all. No worries there. I don't know how to fish. I don't even think I could touch one

The Roe River is recognized by the Guinness Book of World Records as the world's shortest river. The Roe flows 200 feet between Giant Springs and the Missouri River near Great Falls.

46 out of Montana's 56 counties are considered "frontier counties" with an average population of 6 or fewer people per square mile.

MooseThe moose, now numbering over 8,000 in Montana, was thought to be extinct in the Rockies south of Canada in the 1900s. We will take a few pictures for our moose-deprived friend, Dal. :)

No state has as many different species of mammals as Montana. I'm sure to love it.

The most visited place in Montana is Glacier National Park, known as the crown jewel of the continent. It lies along Montana's northern border and adjoins Waterton Lakes National Park in Canada, forming the world's first International Peace Park.

Miles City is known as the Cowboy Capitol. We will see about that.

Montana has the largest grizzly bear population in the lower 48 states. Hopefully, they're all still sleeping.

Montana is nicknamed the Treasure State.  Hopefully, it will live up to that nickname!

And my favorite: In Excelsior, it is illegal to "worry the squirrels."
Maybe it's because they have good friends:

I got most of this info from www.legendsofamerica.com.

I feel really, really good about this trip. AND I found my snow clothes in the garage. :)

Let's get this day over so we can start tomorrow.

The definition of courage in my book is to leave an name with your snarky anonymous comment. But hey, I understand human nature. Sometimes we're all cowards. No worries.

No, I am saving up the snarky comments til you get back.
I’d be envious if you were going in spring or summer. Nope, I will wait til summer, I can stay at home and enjoy the snow, ice, & temps near zero.
Besides I want the frontiersman experience next trip. No planes, rental cars, room service, well maybe just a hotel room on the final night.
I spent a cold/sleepless night (first trip) down alongside the Rio Chama in a cozy rock shelter, except at the time I didn’t know that what they’re called. Maybe if I would have stolen an airline blankey I could have fallen asleep that night. It was only like 50 degrees right, big whoop. Walking the 8 miles back to the car that night wasn’t an option. It was certainly one of the most exhilarating things I have ever done. Funny how when you’re drunk with gold fever, you do feel invincible. If there were rattle snakes, I never saw one and I’m thankful I never saw any mountain lions, because those weren’t Halloween cattle skeletons lying around.
Have a good trip, maybe you’ll be able to enlighten us some on your thought process.
