Well, I had half of a post written out, and was going to finish it this morning, but I slept in until 5:30, and I've got just 15 minutes before I have to run Joe to school, and I haven't done my hair yet, soooo...that post is gonna have to wait.
This weekend was a whirlwind...started off terribly and ended pretty good. Last week, Joe missed a couple days of school with a strep/flu thing. I had it by Friday afternoon, and was sick Saturday, but was well enough yesterday to take Joe to the brand new Cobb Luxury Theater in Daytona to see Dr. Strange in the D Box seats. These seats are advertised to "take you into the action" of the movie by "moving you with the action."
Here's me watching the pre-movie Jennifer Aniston advertisement:
Well, all they do is shake and jerk a little, or a lot depending on how many explosions are going off. Joe thought it was awesome, but I was a little let down. The rumbling of the seat seemed to be just as powerful when a bomb exploded as when a motorcycle was racing down the street. It seemed to get better as the movie went on, but overall, I'm not sure its worth the additional $8 per person.
However, I think this is still relatively new technology, so I think we'll see these seats advance quickly into something more spectacular.
Dr. Strange was pretty good, although at some parts, the CGI seemed a little sloppily put together, as though they were on a tight deadline and rushed it.
Dr. Strange is a neurosurgeon, and so much like House it was hard not to believe the writers modeled this character by watching every episode of House ever made. They even looked and sounded alike--long lost twins, maybe?
And it appears I'm not the only one who noticed the similarity...these are all over the Internet:
Anyway, like Dr. House, Dr. Strange gets to pick and choose his cases, and turns down the patients that are either impossible to save or too easy to save. He chooses the "safe" patients--the ones that make him look great when he succeeds, which further builds his reputation--and ego.
Well, one night, he's driving his car way too fast on a high California road. You know, the kind of road you shouldn't be driving too fast on and passing cars willy nilly as the D Box seat rumbles beneath you with every shift of the gears.
Anyway, as he's multitasking (talking on the phone trying to decide which patient to next accept), he suddenly crashes his car--spectacularly-- and that scene was truly breathtaking in it's surprise and awfulness factor. I couldn't imagine anyone living through such an accident, but he did, but with grievous nerve injury that left the nerves in his hands severely damaged, which ends his career.
From there, I'm thinking, "Okay, here's where things get Marvel-y. He's going to fall into a vat of radioactivity that makes his hands super magic-y or someone is going to kidnap him and implant a computer chip in his hand, or..."
But, nope. Dr. Strange is unique in the Marvel Universe in that he's taught his superpower, which is really just a twist on New Age Transcendentalism, with Astral Projection and other New Age-y beliefs. Sorta disappointing in the magical aspect.
Anyway, it was a decent movie, but maybe a little over the top in the New Age/Illuminati type stuff.
But, that's about the extent of my weekend...time for another week of work...hopefully this week will run a little smoother than last week did.
I'll try and get the post I'm working on up tomorrow. :)
